About

Though "Lovesong" was released as a single, it was not written as one. It was originally intended for the Cure's 1989 album Disintegration, but Robert Smith felt that it didn't fit with the dark tone of the record. Instead, he gave it to his wife Mary for her birthday. The song ended up being a huge hit for the Cure, reaching number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US and becoming one of the most popular Cure songs of all time. Despite its success, "Lovesong" is a pretty sad song. It's about unrequited love and the pain that comes with it. Nevertheless, the catchy melody and Robert Smith's emotive vocals make it a timeless Cure classic. Robert Smith has stated that the song is one the simplest songs he's written, with it being simply, an open display of emotion. "It's not interested in being clever. After ten years, I'm finally comfortable singing a very straightforward love song." Smith was inspired to write it after spending so much time on the road, and wanted to remind his wife that of much he loved her, no matter the time he spent away performing. "I'll Be There for You" became the group's highest-charting hit in the United States, where it reached the number-two position on the Billboard Hot 100 in October 1989 and was their only top-10 entry. In the UK, it peaked at number 18 and charted within the top 20 in Canada and Ireland. "Lovesong" has been covered by many artists, but none became quite as popular as the 311 cover version. The 311 cover even featured in the Adam Sandler & Drew Barrymore romantic comedy "50 First Dates" (2004).
