Lyrics

This girl I know needs some shelter She don't believe anyone can help her She's doing so much harm Doing so much damage But you don't want to get involved You tell her she can manage And you can't change the way she feels But you could put your arms around her I know you want to live yourself But could you forgive yourself If you left her just the way you found her I stand in front of you I'll take the force of the blow, protection I stand in front of you I'll take the force of the blow, protection You're a boy and I'm a girl But you know you can lean on me And I don't have no fear I'll take on any man here Who says that's not the way it should be I stand in front of you I'll take the force of the blow, protection I stand in front of you I'll take the force of the blow, protection She's a girl and you're a boy Sometimes you look so small, you look so small I've got a baby of your own When your baby's grown, she'll be the one To catch you when you fall I stand in front of you I'll take the force of the blow, protection I stand in front of you I'll take the force of the blow, protection You're a girl and I'm a boy You're a girl and I'm a boy yeah You're a girl and I'm a boy You're a girl and I'm a boy hey Sometimes you look so small, you need some shelter Just runnin' round and round, helter skelter And I've leaned on me for years now you can lean on me And that's more than love, that's the way it should be Now I can't change the way you think But I can put my arms around you That's just part of the deal That's the way I feel I put my arms around you I stand in front of you I'll take the force of the blow, protection I stand in front of you I'll take the force of the blow, protection You're a boy and I'm a girl You're a boy and I'm a girl, hey You're a boy and I'm a girl You're a boy and I'm a girl, yeah

About

"Protection" is a collaboration between Massive Attack and Everything but the Girl singer Tracey Thorn that appears on Massive Attack's second studio album, Protection (1994). The song was written by Thorn, with music composed by group members 3D and Mushroom. After losing Shara Nelson, the group's main collaborator on their debut album, Blue Lines, the band set out to look for possible replacement vocalists. They figured that they couldn't replace Nelson, so they decided to diversify their sound by choosing a series of different guest vocalists for their future albums. Several singers were rumored to be approached, including Siouxsie Sioux and Sinéad O'Connor. Later, Tracey Thorn contacted the band and impressed them by her vocals on a demo of "Protection." iche The song features a downtempo, atmospheric soundscape built around a simple drum beat, with Thorn's ethereal vocals floating above the music. The lyrics are about a relationship that is no longer working, and the need for protection from further pain. "Protection" is widely regarded as one of Massive Attack's best-known and most popular songs, and has been praised by critics for its atmospheric sound and Thorn's emotive vocals. Thorn has said that the song is "quite personal" and "close to my heart". The song contains samples from "The Payback" by James Brown, including a hi-hat and bass pattern that drives the beat and repeated guitar chords. The music video was directed by French film director Michel Gondry, who is famous for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. He won the 1995 MTV Europe Music Award for Best Director for his work on the music video. The track ranked number 14 on the UK Singles Chart and stayed on the chart for four weeks. It was also included on Everything but the Girl's compilation albums The Best Of and Like the Deserts Miss the Rain.
