Lyrics

Voodoo in my blood is livid Blood take, I'm chillin' Chill me got the soul of a mimic It's not quite right, you must be a cynic Sign of the wars is my grinning Come in to my time and see me Sock it to me, sock it to me, timid I'm yours, I'm yours Why does the blood never stick to your teeth? Momma, stop giving me grief Why does the blood always stick to your teeth? Momma, stop giving me grief Why does the blood always stick to your teeth? Momma, stop giving me grief Barely, barely grieving Keep the front door open Wipe that cheeky grin and come on, now Barely, barely grieving Keep the front door open Wipe that cheeky grin and come on, now Voodoo in my blood is livid Blood take, I'm chillin' Chill me got the soul of a mimic It's not quite right, you must be a cynic Sign of the wars is my grinning Come in to my time and see me Sock it to, me sock it to me, timid I'm yours, I'm yours Why does the blood never stick to your teeth? Momma, stop giving me grief Why does the blood always stick to your teeth? Momma, stop giving me grief Why does the blood always stick to your teeth? Momma, stop giving me grief Barely, barely grieving Keep the front door open Wipe that cheeky grin and come on, now Barely, barely grieving Keep the front door open Wipe that cheeky grin and come on, now

About

Voodoo in My Blood is the third track from Massive Attack's 2016 EP Ritual Spirit. The song features a dark and sinister sound, with eerie synths and percussion creating an ominous atmosphere. The lyrics tell a story of someone who is possessed by a voodoo spirit, and the narrator's attempts to save them. The track builds to a climax of chaotic energy, before fading out into a haunted whisper. The climax is portrayed in the song's music video in a scene where actress Rosamund Pike reacts in a troubled manner to a robotic creature while walking through a deserted subway station. This perhaps is inspired by a similar subway scene in Andrzej Żuławksi's movie Possession (1981) where the character Anna has a violent miscarriage. Massive Attack are known for their dark and atmospheric music, and Voodoo in My Blood is no exception. The song creates a feeling of unease and foreboding, which is heightened by the lyrics. The track features vocals from Young Fathers, a musical trio from Scotland. The lyrics can also be interpreted as a way to describe the fear of the main character who is frightened by a worsening relationship with a significant other.
